The current federal government in Ottawa has expressed very little interest in supporting renewable power development. Its current EcoEnergy for Renewable Power program is not being renewed. The only support provided to renewable power is by way of accelerated tax right off provisions available to all energy providers.
The Canadian constitution does not allow direct federal regulation of provincial utilities. Federal opposition parties have all indicated support for renewable power and promise to consider federal support for provincial feed in tariffs if they form a government. In Canada, opposition parties can only introduce legislation through a “private members bill”.
